It's not just teeth we deal with! We often forget that the teeth are supported by the surrounding structures of gums and bones and these too can cause pain and early tooth loss. Furthermore, the whole system is related to your jaw joints and your facial muscles which make your jaws move. Having a beautiful, healthy smile for life means everything must work in harmony and be stable and it is our job to make sure we assess, diagnose and treat all related problems in the head and neck area.

These include:

It may seem obvious but starting at the beginning is always the very best place to start! Therefore before embarking on any type of dental treatment we always conduct an initial comprehensive examination first.*.

Many people fail to realize that our mouths may be a reflection of/or be related to other conditions of our general health. E.g. poorly controlled/ undiagnosed diabetics may experience frequent mouth ulcers. We spend time taking a detailed history from you and learning about your concerns as we strongly believe in adopting a holistic approach to your dental care and plan treatment not just for a healthy mouth and teeth but for your whole wellbeing.

Our very comprehensive examination involves an assessment of 12 main areas which include:

  • The Jaw joints and muscles of mastication (this can be related to tension headaches)
  • Oral cancer Screening: assessing all the Soft tissues: e.g. tongue, roof of the mouth
  • Your Gum  health including measuring bone loss
  • Your Occlusion (how your teeth meet together i.e. bite)
  • The health of all your teeth and existing restorations

Possible additional investigations at this appointment may include:

  • Radiographs (or X-rays) as many diseases of the teeth and surrounding tissues cannot be seen by visual examination alone.

X-rays may reveal for example small areas of decay between the teeth or below existing restorations (fillings) and infections in the bone. We use digital radiography which has been shown to reduce radiation dosage to the patient by up to 70% as compared to conventional film X-rays.

Finding and treating dental problems at an early stage can save time, money and unnecessary discomfort. If you have a hidden tumour, radiographs may even help save your life.
  • Use of an intra-oral camera and digital photos to clearly show you areas which are of concern.
  • Impression taking for study models: this is usually needed for planning more complicated treatment including cosmetic makeovers.

After the consultation appointment you will be provided with a written treatment estimate which does not place any obligation on you to proceed with treatment. However it does allow you to see a detailed breakdown of what is proposed and costs for individual appointments.

*This is with the exception of emergency visits where we need to relieve pain or otherwise treat an urgent problem

The use of acrylic (plastic) and metallic components to create a natural looking alternative to missing several teeth has been a treatment option for many years. While most patients prefer to have fixed, not removable, solutions a denture is sometimes the best and most cost effective and simple way to replace multiple teeth.

Dentures improve your appearance as they also support your cheeks leading to a healthy appearance rather than the collapsed facial appearance that can be seen when all the teeth are lost. Dentures are specific to the wearer and we treat all cases on an individual basis which is why we craft our dentures in a bespoke fashion.

There is always a learning curve when coping with new dentures as speech and chewing may be different at first. However perseverance and an understanding of how dentures function, including their limitations, does mean that the majority of patients do adapt over time and cope well with their new found teeth! It is possible for dentures to be that good they go unnoticed by friends and family and the use of the highest quality materials and techniques ensures excellent chewing and comfort as well as a beautiful smile.

Are you a nervous patient? Do you feel unable to cope with a visit to the dentist but know that you have many dental problems that need to be fixed?

Conscious IV sedation may well be the answer for you. At the Oasis Dental Clinic in Marbella we pride ourselves on being a friendly, professional team who listen and deal with your fears and concerns in a gentle and re-assuring manner. For those who need some additional help to cope with your visits we also offer conscious sedation to relax you at the time of treatment. Most people find that this is a pleasant and acceptable way of experiencing dentistry.

For every new patient, at the initial examination appointment, we will go through your medical and dental history and do a comprehensive examination of your mouth. X-rays may also be taken. Following this, a treatment plan can be discussed and agreed upon. The sedation fee is priced separately per session and we charge a flat fee of 500 euros. We try to combine as much treatment as possible in a single morning/afternoon session which can be around 3-4 hours. This will all be printed to include the full estimated costs of treatment and timing and number of visits. You will also be given some more information about the sedation process including instructions and consent. Of course, you will also have the opportunity to ask any questions at this initial consultation.

At the next agreed visit, our fully qualified anaesthesiologist will be on hand to administer the sedation agent through a small injection in the back of the hand. Once you feel drowsy and sufficiently relaxed, local anaesthetic will be administered to numb your mouth and the dental work will commence. During the procedure you will feel peaceful and largely unaware of what is going on; in fact, many people do not remember anything about their treatment. You will however remain awake during the procedure and be able to respond to verbal communication. At the end of the session you will be allowed to recover until you are fit enough to be discharged home with your escort.

Generally, as you do not lose consciousness this procedure is considered extremely safe for any patient in good general health. Apart from memory loss afterwards you may feel quite tired and possibly have a mild headache similar to a "jet-lag" feeling. However, the majority of patients recover quickly and with few side effects and can easily walk out of the surgery and are able to resume normal activities within 24 hours.

Crowns are a very successful option for repairing cracked, broken, decayed or heavily filled teeth. This restoration is bonded onto the existing tooth to cover and protect the remaining structure. The colour is matched to that of your own teeth and they can look and feel exactly like natural teeth. Many different materials can be used and for improved health and aesthetics porcelain crowns are an ideal choice.

A bridge is one of the options used to fill the space where a tooth has fallen out or been removed .By fixing a replacement tooth (or teeth) to the natural teeth at either side of the gap, a bridge will improve your appearance and the way you bite, chew and speak. As with a crown, the colour is matched to that of your own teeth to create a natural looking appearance.

Crown and bridgework are indirect restorations i.e the laboratory technician is involved in the process  to produce a custom made, well fitted restoration specific to each patient's tooth. Hence indirect restorations generally require two or more visits. Please bear this in mind if you are short of time and are planning to have work done possibly involving the laboratory.

  • During the first visit, the dentist prepares the tooth and makes an impression of the area to be restored. The impression is sent to a dental laboratory, which creates the dental restoration and a provisional crown/bridge is fabricated.
  • At the next appointment, the dentist cements the restoration onto the prepared cavity and adjusts it as needed.

In large cases where we are significantly altering the appearance or occlusion (bite) there will be additional stages of try-ins and provisional restorations.
