Topical Fluoride Treatment

The Oasis Dental Clinic is pleased to offer patients the application of topical fluoride as a preventative treatment as part of a long term plan to maintain great dental health.

What is topical fluoride?

Fluoride is a mineral that occurs naturally in many foods and water. Topical fluoride treatment contains this same fluoride mineral that is widely occurring in toothpastes but the concentrations of the topical fluoride therapy is much higher and is applied for longer, up to 4 minutes per session generally. Once applied to the tooth surfaces fluoride will continue to leach into the tooth surface for a month or more.

What are the benefits to me?

Every day, minerals are added to and lost from a tooth’s outer enamel layer. Minerals are lost (demineralization) from a tooth’s enamel layer when acids – formed from plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth – attack the enamel. Minerals are redeposited (remineralization) to the enamel layer from the foods and waters consumed. If the balance is not controlled then the enamel damage will continue and lead to tooth decay.

Topical fluoride treatment helps shift this balance positively as fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by making the tooth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth. It can also reverse early decay.

Topical fluoride treatments are safe if used as recommended (i.e. they should never be swallowed) and are a quick, painless, cost effective way to help your teeth to stay strong and healthy for longer!
